Your kitchen doors say a lot about your home. The finish you choose affects how your kitchen looks, feels, and works day to day. We've been sorting out kitchen doors for Nottingham homes since 2010, working with everything from shiny gloss to rustic wood grain.

Our team knows what works in local homes. Whether you've got a Victorian terrace in The Park or a new build in Arnold, we'll help you pick door finishes that look great and last for years.

"Michael and his team really listened to what we wanted. They helped us choose a door finish that works with our old house features but still looks modern. Really happy with how it turned out." - Jane and Thomas, West Bridgford

Painted Finish Options

Painted doors are mega popular in Nottingham homes. They give a clean, smart look and you can choose pretty much any colour.

We offer:

  • Matt finishes - smooth with no shine, hides fingerprints better
  • Satin finishes - bit of shine, easy to clean
  • Gloss finishes - very shiny, makes rooms feel bigger

Factory-painted doors have a really even finish and are tougher than hand-painted ones. But we can do hand-painting too if you want something special.

Lots of our Nottingham customers are going for dark blues and greens at the moment. Grey is still pretty popular too. We can match any paint colour from Farrow & Ball, Little Greene, or Dulux.

We did a lovely cream painted finish for a customer in Beeston last month. They wanted something that wouldn't date, and it looks proper smart.

Wood and Veneer Finishes

Nothing beats real wood for warmth and character. We offer solid wood doors and veneer doors (thin layers of real wood on a core).

Our wood options include:

  • Oak - hard-wearing with lovely grain patterns
  • Walnut - rich darker colour
  • Pine - lighter, more knots and character
  • Cherry - warm reddy tones that get deeper over time

We can do different stains from light to dark, and different coatings like oil, wax or lacquer.

Wood doors work amazin in period properties like the Victorian homes in Nottingham's Lace Market. They add character and age well.

All our timber comes from properly managed forests. We don't use dodgy sources.

"The oak doors Michael recommended for our kitchen have been brilliant. They've got loads of character and they're wearing really well with our young kids!" - Denise, Ruddington

High-Gloss Finishes

For a modern, sleek look, high-gloss doors are spot on. They reflect light and make even small Nottingham kitchens feel bigger.

Our high-gloss options:

  • Acrylic - the most premium, scratch-resistant and non-yellowing
  • Vinyl - more affordable but still looks good
  • Polyester - good middle option

White gloss is still the most popular, but we're doing more coloured gloss doors now. Deep red and anthracite grey are popular in the newer houses around West Bridgford.

Gloss doors do show fingerprints and need wiping down more often, but they're dead easy to clean with just a soft cloth.

We did a stunning white gloss kitchen for a flat near Nottingham Market Square last year. The owners wanted something to brighten up a north-facing room, and it worked a treat.

Textured and Specialty Finishes

If you want something a bit different, we've got loads of textured and special finish options.

Our customers love:

  • Woodgrain textures - looks like wood but more hard-wearing
  • Matt textures - modern and fingerprint resistant
  • Concrete effects - urban industrial look
  • Metallic finishes - subtle shimmer effect

The concrete-effect doors we fitted in a Mapperley home got lots of compliments. They look expensive but are actually quite affordable.

Textured finishes are good for busy family kitchens as they hide marks and fingerprints better than smooth doors.

"We went for the textured wood-effect doors and they look so realistic! Much easier to keep clean than our old painted doors too." - Chas and Emily, Hucknall

Finish Performance Factors

Different finishes last different amounts of time and need different care.

Here's what affects how your doors perform:

  • Sunlight - can fade some colours and finishes
  • Moisture - can affect wood and some painted finishes
  • Heat - can damage some materials if very close to ovens
  • Cleaning products - harsh ones can damage finishes

We only use finishes that work well in Nottingham's climate. Our doors are tested to cope with the typical temp and humidity changes in UK homes.

Gloss and acrylic doors are generally the most durable and easiest to clean. Wood needs a bit more love but ages beautifully. Painted doors might need touching up after several years.

What kitchen door finish is best for my home?

This depends on a few things:

If you've got young kids, textured or matt finishes hide fingerprints better. If you're in a rental, mid-range vinyl doors give good value.

For older Nottingham homes (like those Victorian terraces in The Park), wooden doors or painted shaker style doors look more in keeping. For new builds in places like Arnold or Bestwood, contemporary gloss or matt doors work better.

Your budget matters too. Acrylic gloss doors cost more than vinyl ones. Solid wood costs more than veneer or wood-effect.

Most of our Nottingham customers want something that:

  1. Looks good
  2. Is easy to clean
  3. Won't go out of fashion too quick
  4. Fits their budget

We're honest about what different finishes cost to buy and maintain. We want you to be happy years down the line, not just on day one.

Finish Transformation Case Study: Hand-Painted Finish Transformation in Beeston

Last year we worked with the Johnsons in Beeston who had a kitchen with good quality cabinets but dated pine doors.

They couldn't afford a whole new kitchen but wanted a fresh look. We suggested replacing just the doors with hand-painted ones.

The process:

  1. Removed old doors and measured everything carefully
  2. Ordered new door fronts in a paintable finish
  3. Hand-painted them in the sage green colour they'd chosen
  4. Added new handles in brushed brass
  5. Fitted everything back perfectly

The whole job took 3 days and cost about a third of a new kitchen.

"It looks like a complete new kitchen! Michael suggested a colour we wouldn't have thought of and it looks amazing. The hand-painted finish gives it a really special look." - The Johnsons, Beeston

Door Finish Samples

It's really hard to choose door finishes from pictures. That's why we offer a proper sample service.

You can:

  • Come to our Nottingham showroom to see full-size doors
  • Borrow sample swatches to take home
  • Have our mobile showroom visit you (for a small deposit, refunded if you order)
  • Get expert colour matching advice from Mike, who used to work as a decorator

Seeing samples in your own home is really important. The light in your kitchen affects how colours and finishes look.

We recently helped a family in Carlton choose a finish by bringing several large samples to their home. What looked good in our showroom looked completely different in their kitchen, and they ended up with a totally different choice!

FAQ

What's the most durable finish for kitchen doors?

Acrylic gloss doors are probably the toughest. They resist scratches, don't yellow, and clean up really well. But they cost more. Vinyl and laminate doors are good middle options. Wood and painted finishes need a bit more care but can be refinished if damaged.

How do painted and vinyl wrapped kitchen door finishes compare?

Vinyl wrapped doors (where a vinyl covering is wrapped around the door) are usually cheaper and more consistent in colour/finish than painted doors. They're also more water-resistant. But they can't be repaired easily if damaged. Painted doors have a more premium look, especially hand-painted ones, and can be touched up or repainted.

Can kitchen doors be refinished or repainted?

Yes, most types can. Painted doors are easiest to refinish. Wood doors can be sanded and restained. Vinyl and acrylic doors can't really be refinished, but individual damaged doors can be replaced.

What kitchen door finishes are easiest to maintain?

Gloss acrylic and vinyl doors are dead easy to clean - just a wipe with a soft cloth and mild cleaner. Matt textured doors hide marks better so need less frequent cleaning. Wood and painted doors need more careful cleaning products.

How long do different kitchen door finishes last?

With proper care:

  • Acrylic doors - 15+ years
  • Good quality vinyl - 10-15 years
  • Painted doors - 7-10 years before maybe needing touch-ups
  • Wood - indefinitely if maintained, and they age nicely

Are matte or gloss kitchen door finishes more practical?

Depends on your priorities. Matt finishes hide fingerprints and smudges better, so look cleaner with less wiping. Gloss finishes show every mark but clean up more easily. For busy family kitchens, matt or textured finishes usually work better.
