What Is a Corian Solid Surface Worktop?

Corian is a solid surface material made by DuPont. It combines acrylic resin with natural minerals to create a surface that looks and feels like stone but behaves very differently. It has no pores. That means liquids, bacteria, and mould have nowhere to go.
It can be shaped, curved, and joined so that seams are invisible to the eye. Unlike granite or quartz, if it gets scratched or marked, the surface can be repaired and restored. No replacement needed.

It's used in kitchens, bathrooms, commercial spaces, and healthcare environments — anywhere hygiene and durability matter. In Nottingham homes, we fit it in everything from compact terraced kitchens to large open-plan family spaces.

Why Nottingham Homeowners Choose Corian Over Quartz and Granite

We get asked a lot about Corian vs quartz and Corian vs granite. They're all good materials, but they do different things well. Here's the honest version:

Corian vs Quartz

Quartz is harder and more heat-resistant. But it has visible joins, it can't be moulded into shapes, and if it chips or cracks the damage is usually permanent. Corian gives you a seamless, unjoined surface — and if it gets damaged it can be repaired. Corian also lets you have an integrated sink as one continuous piece. Quartz doesn't.

Corian vs Granite

Granite looks great but every slab is different — what you see in the showroom isn't exactly what you get. It's also porous without sealing, heavy, and the joins show. Corian comes in over 100 consistent colours, has invisible joins, and doesn't need sealing. For people who want a clean, controlled look, Corian usually wins.

What Corian Does Better Than Both

The things that make Corian stand out:
  • Completely seamless surface — joins are virtually invisible
  • Integrated Corian sinks — the sink and worktop are one piece, no rim, no seal
  • Fully repairable — scratches and minor damage can be sanded out
  • Thermoformable — can be shaped into curves and unusual layouts
  • Non-porous — bacteria and mould can't get into the surface
  • Over 100 colours — consistent batch to batch, every time
  • Can be used for Corian splashbacks and upstands to match the worktop perfectly

Durability And Longevity Of Corian Worktops

Most worktop materials are finished at the surface only. Scratch through that finish and you've got a problem. Corian is solid all the way through, so the colour and texture go right to the base. That's what makes it repairable.

Light Surface Marks

For light surface marks, a non-abrasive pad and a circular cleaning motion is usually enough. You can do this yourself at home with no special products.

Deeper Scratches and Impact Marks

For deeper scratches or minor impact marks, a Corian repair kit has everything you need. For anything more serious, our team can come out and resurface the affected area. In most cases, you won't be able to tell where the damage was.

This matters a lot in family kitchens around Beeston and Carlton, where worktops get heavy daily use. Kids, knives, pans — things happen. With most stone worktops, a bad chip means living with it or replacing a section. With Corian, it's a repair job.

We've fixed worktops that customers thought were beyond saving. More often than not, we can get them back to how they looked on day one.

Corian vs Quartz: What to Pick for a Nottingham Kitchen

Both are popular choices. Both look great. But they suit different kitchens and different homeowners.

Quartz

Quartz is harder and more heat resistant. It's a good fit for larger, open-plan kitchens where the worktop is a visual centrepiece. The downside is that quartz can't be repaired. If it chips at a corner or cracks near a hob cut-out, that damage is permanent. Quartz also needs to be joined with visible seams on longer runs.

Corian

Corian is softer underfoot but fully repairable. Joins are near-invisible. It can be shaped around curves, formed into integrated sinks, and fabricated with matching upstands in one continuous piece. It works in kitchens where the layout has angles, curves, or non-standard dimensions.

We fit both in Nottingham. In our experience, newer builds in West Bridgford and Arnold tend to go for quartz — the kitchens are often larger and the layouts more straightforward. In older character homes, Corian handles the quirks of the property better. Period properties with uneven walls, angled alcoves, or short non-standard runs are where Corian really earns its place.

If you're not sure which suits your kitchen, bring us in for a look. We'll give you a straight answer.

Corian Splashbacks and Upstands Nottingham

Most people think Corian is just for worktops. It works equally well for splashbacks and upstands — and when you use the same material for both the worktop and the splashback, you get a completely seamless wall-to-surface finish with no grout lines, no visible joins, and nothing for grease or water to sit in.

Corian splashbacks are particularly popular in Nottingham kitchens where tiles have been removed and the homeowner wants a cleaner, easier-to-maintain finish. They're also a good option for kitchen extensions where the extra wall space makes a tiled splashback feel busy.

We fabricate and fit Corian upstands and splashbacks as part of the same installation visit as the worktop, so there's no coming back on a second day.

Corian Kitchen Island Worktops Nottingham

Kitchen islands are one of the most common requests we get from Nottingham homeowners right now — especially in West Bridgford, Arnold, and the newer developments around the city. Corian works really well on islands because it can be made in one continuous piece regardless of the size, and the edges can be shaped to order.Popular options we fit on Corian islands:
  • Waterfall edges — where the Corian wraps over the side of the island all the way to the floor
  • Overhang sections for breakfast bar seating
  • Curved or radius ends to soften the look
  • Integrated pop-up sockets flush with the worktop surface
  • LED lighting channels routed into the underside of the Corian
If you're planning a kitchen island, it's worth talking to us before you commit to quartz or granite. Corian can do things with island worktops that other materials can't.

Hot Pans, Stains, and Daily Mess — What Corian Actually Handles

A lot of homeowners worry about damaging an expensive worktop in normal daily use. Here's what Corian can and can't handle.

Seamless Integration For A Modern Look With Corian Worktops

Corian can handle brief contact with warm items. But direct contact with hot pans off the hob can crack or discolour the surface. Always use a trivet or heat pad. This is the same guidance as most worktop materials — including quartz.

Stains

Corian is non-porous. Coffee, wine, cooking oil, and juice sit on the surface rather than soaking in. Wipe them off with a damp cloth and mild detergent. Most everyday spills leave no trace.

Scratches

Surface marks can be buffed out as covered above. The key point is that you won't be living with damage permanently.

Bacteria and Hygiene

Because Corian has no pores, bacteria have nowhere to take hold. This makes it a practical surface for food preparation. It's the same reason Corian is used in healthcare and dental environments. Corian also contains no silica — worth knowing, as some stone worktops do, and silica dust is a health concern during cutting and installation.

For compact kitchens near the Victoria Centre or in Nottingham city flats where counter space is limited, easy cleaning matters more than anywhere. Corian delivers that without special products or complicated routines.

How We Fit Corian Worktops: Laser Template to Finished Install

We handle the whole process from the first call to the finished kitchen. Here's how it works.

Stage 1 — Free Consultation

We will visit your home. We look at your kitchen, talk through colours and finishes, and bring samples so you can see them in your own light. We don't push you towards a particular choice.

Stage 2 — Laser Template

Once you've confirmed your order, we come back to take an exact template using laser technology. Every measurement is recorded to the millimetre — the position of the sink, the hob cut-out, the tap holes, the angle of every wall. This is where the fit is won or lost. We don't guess.

Stage 3 — Fabrication in Nottingham

We fabricate your worktop at our facility in Nottingham, NG8. The material is cut, shaped, and finished by hand. Integrated sinks, drainer grooves, upstands, and splashbacks are all fabricated as part of the same piece where specified. Because we work locally, we're not waiting on a factory outside the county.

Stage 4 — Installation

Our fitting team installs the worktop according to the template. Most kitchen installations take one to three days depending on size and complexity. We remove your old worktop, prepare the surface, fit the new one, and leave the kitchen clean. We've been doing this for 15 years in Nottingham. The process is straightforward because we've refined it through hundreds of installations.

Corian Doesn't Need Sealing — But Here's What It Does Need

Homeowners switching from granite or marble are often used to annual sealing. With Corian, you can stop doing that. The surface is non-porous by its nature, not because of a treatment applied on top. There's nothing to wear off and nothing to reapply.

Daily Care

What Corian does need is simple daily care:
  • Warm soapy water or a mild ammonia-based cleaner for everyday cleaning
  • A non-abrasive pad if you need to tackle stubborn marks
  • Avoid strong acids, bleach-based products, or harsh abrasive pads — these can dull the surface
  • A non-abrasive cream cleaner every now and then will restore the sheen if the surface starts to look flat

Hard Water in Nottinghamshire

Parts of Nottinghamshire have moderately hard water. Limescale can build up around taps over time. On Corian, this sits on the surface. A mild de-scaler or diluted white vinegar wipes it away cleanly. There's no risk of etching like you'd get with marble.

Corian Alternatives We Also Fit in Nottingham

Corian is our most popular solid surface product, but we also fit other acrylic worktop brands. If budget is a factor, or you want a specific colour that another brand does better, we can help. The brands we work with most include:
  • HI-MACS by LG — similar quality to Corian, slightly different colour range, often a bit less expensive
  • Hanex — a solid performer with 70+ colours, good value for money
  • Staron by Samsung — cost-effective solid surface option, wide colour choice
  • Minerva — a popular UK solid surface brand we supply and fit separately
We'll tell you which one makes the most sense for your kitchen and your budget. Sometimes Corian is the right answer. Sometimes it isn't. We'd rather you ended up with the right worktop than the most expensive one.

Frequently Asked Questions About Corian Worktops

How Much Does a Corian Worktop Cost in Nottingham?

We know this is the first thing most people want to know, so here's a straight answer.
For a professionally fitted Corian worktop in a standard Nottingham kitchen, you're typically looking at:
  • 2m² worktop area — roughly £1,150 to £1,400 fitted
  • 3m² worktop area — roughly £1,650 to £2,000 fitted
  • 4m² worktop area — roughly £2,150 to £2,600 fitted
These are ballpark figures. The actual cost depends on the colour you choose (some Corian colours cost more than others), whether you want an integrated sink, the number of cutouts for hobs, and the complexity of the layout.

An integrated Corian sink typically adds £200–£400 to the cost, but it removes the need to buy and fit a separate sink, so the real difference in total project cost is usually smaller than people expect.

We give free quotes. Call us on 0115-647-4643 and we'll come to your home in Nottingham and give you an exact price with no obligation.

Do I Need to Visit a Showroom, or Can Someone Come to My Home in Nottingham?

We offer free home visits across Nottingham and into the surrounding areas including Beeston, West Bridgford, Arnold, and Ruddington. We bring colour samples and finishes with us so you can see everything in your kitchen's actual light.

Can You Fit Corian Around an Integrated Sink in My Nottingham Kitchen?

Yes — integrated sinks are one of Corian's strongest features. We fabricate the sink and worktop as one continuous piece, so there are no joints, no seams, and no gap for water to get into. We can do the same with upstands and splashbacks if you want the full seamless run.

How Long Does the Whole Process Take From First Call to Fitted Worktop?

From initial consultation to finished installation, most projects take one to three weeks. The exact timeline depends on how busy we are at the time of booking and the complexity of your kitchen. Installation itself typically takes one to three days.

How durable are Corian worktops?

Corian worktops are known for their exceptional durability. Composed of a unique blend of minerals and acrylic, these surfaces offer a high level of resistance to wear and tear, heat, and impact damage. Their non-porous composition also means that they are impervious to stains, making them ideal for high-usage areas such as kitchens. Provided they are appropriately maintained, Corian worktops can retain their beauty and functionality for many years. However, like all surfaces, they can sustain damage if subjected to excessive force or extreme temperatures. In such situations, the homogeneity of Corian allows for easy repair, often leaving no visible signs of damage.

Can Corian worktops withstand heat?

Corian worktops are designed to resist heat, but they're not heat-proof. They can withstand temperatures up to 100°C (212°F), so hot pots and pans should not be placed directly onto the surface. Instead, use a trivet with rubber feet or a hot pad to protect the surface. Sudden or prolonged exposure to high temperatures may cause damage, including cracking. Thus, it's advisable to shield your Corian worktop from heat-producing appliances like oven toaster and electric grills.

Will Corian Work in a Small Kitchen?

Yes — often better than in larger kitchens. The seamless finish with no visible joins makes a compact kitchen feel cleaner and more open. It works well in terraced houses across Nottingham and in smaller city flats where every surface counts. We've fitted Corian in some very tight spaces over the years and it handles them well.

How should I clean my Corian worktop?

Cleaning your Corian worktop is a straightforward process. On a daily basis, use a damp cloth or sponge with a mild soap or detergent for routine cleaning. For stubborn or dried spills, a non-abrasive cleaner can be used. Always rinse the surface thoroughly after cleaning and wipe it dry to prevent a build-up of residue. Avoid using cleaning products that contain strong acids or alkalis as they may damage the worktop. For more stubborn stains or scratches, refer to the Minor Damage Repair section of this guide. With proper care and maintenance, your Corian worktop will maintain its appearance for many years.

Can I cut directly on my Corian worktop?

While Corian worktops are known for their durability, it is not recommended to cut directly on the surface as it may lead to scratches and damage over time. Instead, always use a cutting board to protect your worktop and maintain its pristine condition.

Can I repair my Corian worktop if it's damaged?

Yes, minor damage like small scratches or minor impact marks can often be repaired at home. For more significant damage, contact a professional repair service. Detailed information about minor damage repair can be found in this document.

Do You Fit Corian in Commercial Kitchens?

We do. Corian is used in restaurant kitchens, cafe counters, and commercial food preparation areas because of its hygiene properties and durability. We work around business hours where needed. Call us to discuss your requirements.

Local Reviews For Our Corian Worktops

Sandeep P — West Bridgford, NG2 ★★★★★
Had our Corian worktops fitted about 3 months ago now and i am honestly over the moon. We went with the black stone effect and it looks brilliant. Justin the worktop fitter who came out was on the ball, turned up when he said he would and got on with it. Only thing I'd say is the wait for the template appointment was a bit longer than expected but that was not their fault, as the colour i wanted was not in stock. Once they started the fitting was done pretty quick. Kitchen looks very different in a positive way. Would 100% recommend to anyone in West Bridgford thinking about Corian worktops. Nice fellows to do business with

Darren Mines — Beeston, NG9 ★★★★☆
I was sceptical at first about paying more for Corian over laminate. My wife had to talk me into it. But after seeing the finished job I get it now. No joins anywhere, the sink just flows straight into the worktop, looks very smart indeed. Adam & Justin were tidy, protected the floor with sheets which I appreciated as new flooring. Knocked one star off only cos the initial quote took a few days to come through but the actual work was spot on. Proper lads that know what they're doing.

Karen and Phil Ashworth — Arnold, NG5 ★★★★★
We've had a few kitchen companies in over the years and honestly some of them have been shocking. These were different. Came out to measure up, explained everything properly, no hard sell or anything like that. Phil was a bit worried about the price at first but they broke it all down for us which helped. The worktop itself is gorgeous — we went with a warm white and it's lifted the whole kitchen. Had it about 6 weeks now and still wiping it down just to look at it ha. Really pleased, tell everyone who asks.

J. Patel — Mansfield, NG18 ★★★★★
Good service. Came on time, did the job, cleaned up after. Worktop looks excellent — much better than what we had before. The seamless bit around the sink is exactly what we wanted, no more grime building up in the gaps. Would use again.

Michelle F — Stapleford, NG9 ★★★☆☆
Worktop itself is lovely, really pleased with how it looks and the quality seems great. Bit of a rocky start to be fair — there was some confusion about the install date and I had to chase a couple of times to get it confirmed. A bit frustrating when you've taken time off work. Once they were here though the guys were great, really friendly and knew what they were doing. And the finished result made up for it. Probably would use them again but hopefully communication would be smoother next time.

Terrance C — Carlton, NG4 ★★★★★
Retired now so been doing bits on the house. Mate of mine from the golf club had these in for his kitchen and said they were the best he'd used so gave em a ring. Glad I did. Bloke came out, had a good look round, didn't try to sell me anything I didn't need. Went with Corian in the end — the solid white — and it looks the business. My wife says it's the best thing we've done to the house in years. Installation took a day and a half, all done properly. At my age you just want someone who turns up and does the job right. These lot did exactly that.
