A kitchen that's short on storage doesn't always need a full refit to fix. Most of the wasted space in an older kitchen sits inside cabinets that were never fitted with proper internals -- a corner unit with a dead zone behind the door, a pan cupboard where everything stacks three deep, a run of drawers doing nothing more than holding loose cutlery. Our workshop measures your existing cabinets and builds drawer systems, pull-out larders and corner mechanisms to fit those exact openings, so a kitchen that already works layout-wise gets the storage it should have had from the start.

If the cabinets themselves are past saving -- carcasses out of square, hinges pulling away from chipboard that's swollen with damp -- a retrofit won't hold up, and that's a job for our kitchen cabinet maker and joiner service instead. Most Nottingham kitchens we're called out to don't need that: the cabinets are sound, they're just poorly organised inside.

What a Storage Retrofit Covers, and What Sits Outside It

  • Custom drawer systems built to your own cabinet openings, including utensil organisers, built-in knife blocks, angled spice inserts, heavy-duty pot-and-pan drawers and bespoke compartments for specific tools.
  • Pull-out and larder pantry systems, from slim 20cm units for tight terraces to motorised pull-down shelving for anyone who struggles to reach the top of a tall cabinet.
  • Corner cabinet solutions -- carousel (lazy susan) units, blind-corner pull-out mechanisms and LeMans-style systems that bring the whole space out into the room.
  • Specialty storage such as wine and beverage racks, appliance garages with sliding doors, baking centre storage and dedicated slots for cooking tools.
  • Retrofitting any of the above into cabinets you already have, so a storage problem doesn't need a full kitchen replacement to fix it.
  • Design and construction by our own workshop joiners, made to measure rather than trimmed down from a standard-size flat-pack insert.

Not Included / Costed Separately

  • Full kitchen unit replacement or structural work such as wall removal -- that's a separate project handled through our kitchen cabinet maker and joiner service and quoted on its own terms.
  • Stone and engineered worktops -- granite, quartz, Corian and Dekton are fitted by our stonemasons as a separate specialism, priced apart from cabinetry.
  • Respraying or repainting existing units, which is handled by our coating team rather than the joinery workshop.
  • New electrical circuits, moved plumbing or gas work needed for a new appliance -- our Part P approved and Gas Safe registered trades can add this in, but it's identified and costed once we've seen the space, not included in a storage-only quote.
  • The appliances themselves -- we build the housing, not the oven, wine cooler or coffee machine that goes inside it.
How We Build and Fit a Storage Retrofit

How We Build and Fit a Storage Retrofit

  1. Call or enquiry -- You describe the storage problem over the phone or by email -- a corner cupboard you can't reach, drawers that jam, an appliance you want built in -- and we arrange a home visit at a time that suits, usually within a week or two.
  2. On-site assessment -- We open every cabinet involved, check carcass squareness, hinge type and cup position, and measure clearances to the wall, worktop and adjoining units. On older properties this is where we catch the things a standard-size insert would miss -- an out-of-plumb wall, a shortened plinth, a socket sitting where a drawer box needs to go.
  3. Design and sign-off -- Storage options are drawn up on the same CAD software used for full kitchen projects, so you can see how a carousel, pull-out larder or drawer bank will actually sit in the space. Once you're happy, we put the scope, price and timescale in writing before anything is cut.
  1. Workshop build -- Drawer boxes, carcasses and mechanisms are built to your exact cabinet openings by our own City & Guilds trained joiners, not ordered in as a standard flat-pack kit trimmed down to fit.
  2. Fitting and completion -- Old fittings are removed, new units are installed and every drawer, hinge and pull-out mechanism is adjusted on site so it runs smoothly against the cabinet it's going into, not just against a factory-standard opening. We walk through the finished work with you before signing it off.

Off-the-Shelf Inserts vs Retrofitted vs Built-In Storage

Storage Option Typical Cost How Well It Fits Guarantee
Shop-bought drawer inserts and organisers Low cost, bought off the shelf Standard sizes -- often need trimming or leave gaps in older cabinets Whatever the retailer offers, rarely covers the fitting
Retrofitted custom storage in your existing cabinets From around £800 Measured and built to your actual cabinet openings 5-year guarantee on labour and installation, 2-year on products
Bespoke storage designed into a full kitchen project Typically £1,500-£3,000, more for a full custom pantry Planned into the cabinetry from the start alongside worktops and finishes 5-year guarantee on labour and installation, 2-year on products

Joinery Backed by a Written Guarantee, Not Just a Sales Pitch

Storage-only jobs get treated with the same rigour as a full kitchen build, not as an afterthought squeezed between bigger jobs. Because our joiners have fitted more than 800 kitchens over 20-plus years, they've measured cabinets built by dozens of different manufacturers, including older stock that's no longer sold, and know which openings are true to size and which need extra clearance built in before a carousel or pull-out mechanism will run smoothly. Retrofit inserts are drawn up on the same CAD software used for full kitchen designs, so you see how a pull-out larder or corner carousel will actually sit in your existing cabinet before it's built, rather than guessing from a catalogue photo.

Joinery Backed by a Written Guarantee, Not Just a Sales Pitch

Cabinet making is carried out by City & Guilds trained joiners in our own workshop, not bought in as pre-cut flat-pack kits, and every retrofit is covered by the same 5-year guarantee on labour and installation and 2-year guarantee on products that applies to a full kitchen project.

Storage Projects Across Nottingham, Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire

Storage Projects Across Nottingham, Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire

Most storage work is fitted out from the Nottingham workshop into the surrounding suburbs -- Wollaton, Beeston, Arnold, Sneinton and West Bridgford -- with Wollaton's period properties often suiting the classic Shaker-style cabinetry that sits comfortably alongside the area's Wollaton Hall-era architecture. Further out, projects are also carried out regularly in the Nottinghamshire towns of Mansfield, Kirkby-in-Ashfield and Stapleford, and on the Derbyshire side of the patch in Long Eaton, Alfreton and Heanor, extending toward Chesterfield and the Derbyshire border. For kitchens along the NET tram corridor through Beeston, that's a route the fitting team uses regularly, which tends to make scheduling appointments in that direction a bit more flexible.
