A stone worktop changes how a kitchen feels underhand and how it copes with daily use, but granite, quartz, marble and sintered surfaces like Dekton and Corian behave differently once they're in a real kitchen rather than a showroom. This page covers what each material is actually like to live with, what fitting one involves once your cabinets are in, and what it costs to get right. If you already know you want granite specifically, our dedicated granite worktop page goes into more depth on that material alone. Otherwise, a free home visit is the fastest way to work out which stone suits your kitchen, your budget and how hard the room gets used.
What's Included When We Fit Your Stone Worktop
- A free home visit to measure the kitchen and talk through granite, quartz, marble, Corian and Dekton options
- Laser templating once cabinets are in place, so the slab is cut to the exact dimensions of your kitchen
- In-house cutting of the stone to size, including sink, hob and appliance cutouts
- Your choice of edge profile, from a simple pencil edge to bevelled, bullnose or ogee finishes
- On-site jointing and fitting by qualified stonemasons, with seams matched for colour and pattern
- Removal and disposal of your old worktop under our registered waste carrier licence
- A written installation warranty and formal sign-off once the worktop is fitted

Not Included / Costed Separately
- Reinforcing or altering cabinets that aren't strong enough to carry a heavier stone slab -- this is costed separately once seen on site
- Matching upstands or splashback stone, unless specified and priced at the quotation stage
- Supplying new sinks, taps or hobs -- we fit them into the worktop, but the appliances themselves are a separate cost
- Repairing existing plumbing or electrics that pre-date the new worktop
- Bespoke inlays or contrasting stone backsplashes beyond the standard specification, which are quoted individually

From First Call to a Fitted Worktop
- Enquiry and material talk-through: Call or enquire online to talk through which stone -- granite, quartz, marble, Corian or Dekton -- makes sense for your kitchen, your budget and how hard the space gets used day to day, before we book a home visit.
- Home visit, CAD design and slab selection: We measure the kitchen in person and walk you through a photo-realistic CAD design. For natural stone like granite or marble, you're welcome to view and choose the actual slab, since colour and veining vary from piece to piece; quartz and Dekton are manufactured to a consistent batch, so a sample is usually enough to decide.
- Laser templating on site: Once your cabinets are installed, we take laser measurements in your kitchen and mark exactly where sink, hob and appliance cutouts need to go, so the slab is cut to what's actually in the room rather than to the original drawing.
- In-house cutting and edge profiling: The slab is cut and edge-profiled under controlled workshop conditions rather than in your home, which keeps the dust and noise of cutting stone out of your kitchen.
- Fitting, jointing and handover: Our stonemasons install and seam-joint the worktop on site, check it's level and the joints are tight, then talk you through day-to-day care before handing over your written installation warranty.
What a Stone Worktop Costs
As the comparison above sets out, price varies by material: granite and marble sit toward the top of the range, slate is generally more affordable, and quartz's engineered construction usually places it in a similar bracket to natural stone once you factor in that it needs no sealing over its lifetime. A full kitchen project including a stone worktop typically starts from around £5,000, and flexible finance is available through an FCA-regulated partner, subject to status. The final figure for the worktop itself depends on slab size, the edge profile chosen, how many cutouts are needed for sinks and hobs, and which stone you pick -- so a firm price needs a free home visit and a written, no-obligation quotation rather than a phone estimate.

Granite, Quartz, Marble or Dekton -- Which Suits Your Kitchen?
| Material | Heat & Scratch Resistance | Maintenance | Look | Best Suited To |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Granite | Naturally heat and scratch resistant | Benefits from periodic sealing | Wide natural colour and pattern variation, no two slabs alike | High-traffic family kitchens |
| Quartz | Very durable, engineered for consistency | Non-porous, no sealing required | Uniform colour and pattern for a cleaner, more consistent finish | Low-maintenance, busy households |
| Marble | Elegant but softer and more porous than granite or quartz | Needs regular sealing and careful cleaning | Distinctive veining, the most luxurious look of the natural stones | Feature worktops where appearance leads |
| Corian / Dekton (sintered) | Ultra-tough, high heat tolerance | Virtually maintenance-free, non-porous | Contemporary, seamless, uniform finish | Modern, low-fuss kitchens |
One Team From Slab to Sign-Off, Not a Handoff to a Subcontractor
The same joiners who fitted your cabinets are still involved when the stonemasons come to joint and fit your worktop, because both trades sit inside one team rather than being handed between separate businesses that have never seen each other's work. That matters most on older properties, where cabinets aren't always standard depth or perfectly level, and a slab has to be scribed and jointed to what's actually there on site rather than to what a drawing says should be there. We're a family-run business, not a franchise or national chain, so the person who measures your kitchen at the home visit is someone you can call directly if a question comes up after fitting. Every job runs on a written agreement settled before work starts, with no extras added later that weren't priced upfront, and finishes with

a formal sign-off, a 5-year guarantee on labour and installation, and a 2-year guarantee on the stone itself. Our carpentry is carried out by City & Guilds trained master craftsmen and we're members of the Construction Industry Training Board and the Federation of Small Businesses -- credentials that matter when a heavier stone slab is going onto cabinets our own team built, not somebody else's.

Nottingham Stone Worktops, and How Far We Travel to Fit Them
Nottingham home visits make up most of the diary, though what we recommend on site depends on the property. In city-centre conservation areas near the Castle and the Sandstone Caves, floors and internal walls can be a few degrees out of true after decades of settlement, so templating after the cabinets are fitted -- rather than working from a drawing beforehand -- matters more than it would in a new-build. It catches that unevenness before the slab is cut, not after. Newer apartment schemes along the tram corridor served by the NET line through Beeston and Clifton tend to have square, standard-depth carpentry, where a quartz or Dekton worktop usually goes in with fewer on-site adjustments needed. Outside the city we fit regularly in West Bridgford, Wollaton, Beeston, Arnold and Sneinton, then out into Nottinghamshire toward Mansfield, Kirkby-in-Ashfield and
Stapleford, and into Derbyshire for Derby, Long Eaton, Alfreton and Heanor -- broadly a 15-20 mile radius from our workshop, stretching as far as Chesterfield on the Derbyshire side. Jobs further out toward Sheffield, Wakefield or York are possible but need a call first to talk through slab delivery and fitting logistics before we book a home visit.
Got Questions?
Frequently Asked Questions
Will a stone worktop crack or chip over time?
Stone is tough, but it isn't indestructible. The most vulnerable points are corners, thin overhangs and areas around a sink or hob cutout if they're subjected to a heavy, sudden impact. Choosing a suitable slab thickness and edge profile at the design stage reduces the risk, and a chip or crack can usually be repaired rather than needing the whole worktop replaced.
Can you fit a stone worktop onto my existing cabinets, or do I need a full new kitchen?
Often, yes -- stone can be fitted as a standalone upgrade if your existing cabinets are structurally sound enough to carry the extra weight. We check this on the free home visit; if the units need reinforcing first, that's priced separately rather than assumed as part of the worktop cost.
What happens to my old worktop when it's removed?
We take it away and dispose of it under our registered waste carrier licence, so it's dealt with legally rather than left for you to arrange skip hire or a tip run.
Can a sink or hob be fitted seamlessly into a stone worktop?
Yes. Cutouts for sinks and hobs are marked during laser templating and cut to the exact dimensions needed. An undermount sink gives the cleanest, most seamless look; a hob cutout is cut to the manufacturer's exact specification so it sits flush.
How long does it take from template to fitted worktop?
It depends on the material and how quickly the slab supplier can turn around your specific stone, so we'd rather give you an honest timeframe once you've chosen a material than a generic figure that doesn't hold up. We'll confirm dates at the point of quotation.
Is it safe to put hot pans straight onto a stone worktop?
Granite, quartz and sintered surfaces like Dekton all cope well with everyday kitchen heat, but quartz contains a resin binder that's slightly less heat-tolerant than pure natural stone, so we'd still recommend a trivet under very hot pans on any surface -- it protects the joints and sealant even where the stone itself would be fine.
Do you guarantee the stone worktop installation?
Yes -- every installation carries a 5-year guarantee on labour and installation, plus a 2-year guarantee on the product itself, backed by a formal written sign-off once the job is complete.
