If you're planning a new kitchen with an island, the worktop is usually the single biggest decision for it - the material, the overhang for stools, any cut-outs for a sink or hob, and how the joints are finished all affect how the island looks and how long it lasts. Nottingham Kitchen Fitter designs, templates and fits island worktops in granite, quartz, Italian marble and tough sintered surfaces such as Corian and Dekton, as part of a fully project-managed kitchen installation across Nottingham and the wider East Midlands. You can see the full range of worktop materials and finishes we work with, each one measured on site with laser templating and cut in-house before a stonemason joints and fits the island in place.

Materials, Cutting and Fit: What's Included in an Island Worktop Job

  • Free home visit to measure the space and talk through layout options before anything is ordered
  • CAD and interactive floor-planning so you see the island in your own room before committing
  • Choice of granite, engineered quartz, high-character Italian marble, or sintered surfaces such as Corian and Dekton
  • Laser templating once the base units are in place, for a precise on-site fit
  • In-house cutting and edge profiling rather than sending the job out to a third party
  • Cut-outs and integration for a sink, hob, or additional appliance within the island
  • Stonemason jointing and installation, with seams finished to sit flush
  • Coordination with our carpentry team so the cabinetry underneath is built to the worktop's exact dimensions

Not Included / Costed Separately

  • Structural or wall alterations needed to create space for an island - assessed and quoted separately at the home visit, since knocking through can affect load-bearing walls
  • Plumbing and electrical first-fix beyond the island itself, such as rerouting a kitchen's water or power supply, carried out by our NVQ/Part P qualified trades as part of the wider kitchen quote, not the worktop price alone
  • Appliance supply, such as ovens, wine coolers or dishwashers, unless it's part of a full kitchen package
  • Simple like-for-like worktop swaps where the existing cabinetry stays untouched - still possible, but priced and scheduled differently to a new island build

From Template to Finished Stone: Our Island Worktop Timeline

  1. Free home visit -- We measure the kitchen, discuss where the island will sit, and talk through layout and material options with no obligation to book.
  2. CAD design -- You see a photo-realistic view of the island in your own kitchen before any material is ordered or cut.
  3. Written quote and material choice -- Once you've settled on a material - granite, quartz, marble, Corian or Dekton - you get a full written quotation with no hidden extras.
  4. Cabinetry and first-fix -- Our carpenters build and fit the base units the island worktop will sit on, with any plumbing or electrical first-fix carried out by our qualified trades.
  5. Laser templating and in-house cutting -- Once the units are in place, we laser-template the exact shape needed and cut the worktop in-house, including any cut-outs for a sink or hob.
  6. Installation and sign-off -- A stonemason joints and fits the worktop on site, seams are finished flush, and the job ends with a formal sign-off and written installation warranty.

What a Kitchen Island Worktop Costs

Price depends mainly on the material you choose - engineered quartz and granite generally sit in the mid range, while high-character Italian marble and sintered surfaces like Dekton cost more, reflecting the raw material and the skill needed to cut and joint it. Size, the number of cut-outs for a sink or hob, and the edge profile you pick all move the price too. As a broad reference point, full kitchen projects through us start from around £5,000, with flexible finance available through an FCA-regulated finance partner, subject to status. An island worktop on its own, fitted into an existing kitchen, is usually a smaller job than that - but because every kitchen and every island is a different size and shape, an accurate figure needs a free home visit rather than a phone estimate.

Comparing Island Worktop Materials

Material Look Day-to-day care Heat & scratch resistance Typical cost tier
Granite Natural stone, unique veining and flecking in every slab Occasional resealing to keep it non-porous Very good - a genuinely tough natural surface Mid to premium
Engineered quartz Consistent, engineered pattern in a wide colour range Low - non-porous, no sealing needed Good, but still best to use a trivet under hot pans Mid range
Italian marble High-character, classic veining Needs sealing and care around acidic spills like wine or lemon juice Moderate - softer than granite or quartz Premium
Sintered surfaces (Corian, Dekton) Ultra-modern, near-seamless joints Very low maintenance, highly non-porous Excellent - among the toughest surfaces available Premium

Stone Cut and Jointed In-House, Not Outsourced

Getting an island worktop right comes down to two things a lot of kitchen companies don't do themselves: measuring it precisely once the units are actually in place, and cutting the stone under the same roof rather than sending the job out to a separate supplier. We laser-template on site after the base cabinetry is fitted, cut every slab in-house, and finish the joint with our own stonemason, so there's one point of contact from the first cut to the final polish rather than a chain of subcontractors passing the job along. The cabinetry underneath is built by City & Guilds trained carpenters to the worktop's exact dimensions, and any sink or hob plumbed into the island is handled by our NVQ/Part P qualified trades, so the people fitting the stone and the people who built what it sits on have worked together before, not met for the first time on your job. We're family-run rather than part of a national chain - over 20 years and 800+ kitchens in, you're still dealing directly with the people designing and cutting your worktop, not a call centre. Every project finishes with a written installation warranty, a 5-year guarantee on labour and installation, and a 2-year guarantee on products.

Where We Template, Cut and Fit Island Worktops

Stone is heavy and doesn't take kindly to being moved twice, so where our workshop sits relative to your kitchen matters more for a worktop than it would for flat-pack cabinetry - we template, cut and fit within roughly 15-20 miles of Nottingham, taking in Beeston, West Bridgford, Arnold and Sneinton on the Nottinghamshire side, and Derby, Long Eaton, Alfreton and Heanor once you're over into Derbyshire, with Mansfield, Kirkby-in-Ashfield, Stapleford and Chesterfield nearer the edge of that radius. The two ends of that area often call for different choices of worktop: around Wollaton Hall, period housing tends to suit a granite or marble slab with a more traditional edge profile, while newer apartments closer to the city centre more often go for a handleless run in quartz or Dekton. In the older streets around the Lace Market, fitting an island worktop of any real weight means checking what's underneath the floor before it goes in, not after - parts of that area sit above Nottingham's sandstone caves, and some Victorian terraces have suspended timber floors that need looking at before several hundred kilograms of stone is lowered onto them.

Kitchen Island Worktop Questions We Get Asked

How much space do I actually need for a kitchen island?

As a rough guide, you want at least a metre of clear walkway on each side of the island - nearer 1.2 metres is more comfortable - so cupboard doors, the dishwasher and the oven can all be opened without bumping into anything, and more than that on the side where stools will pull out. Whether your kitchen has room for one, and what size, is one of the first things we check on the free home visit.

Can I put a sink or a hob in my island worktop?

Yes, both are common. It does mean planning the plumbing and electrics for the island early, since water and power need to be run to the island's location before the base units go in, and any gas hob work has to be signed off by a Gas Safe registered engineer. We build this into the design and quote from the start rather than as an afterthought.

Which is the best worktop material for a busy island - granite, quartz or marble?

It depends what matters most to you. Quartz is the lowest-maintenance option and very consistent to look at, granite is a genuinely tough natural stone that just needs occasional resealing, and marble gives the most character but needs more care around acidic spills like wine or lemon juice. We can bring samples of each to the home visit so you can compare them against your own worktops.

How long does fitting an island worktop take?

The worktop itself is usually templated once the base cabinetry is installed, cut in-house over the following few days, then fitted on site in a day or two depending on size and the number of joints. Within a full kitchen project, the worktop stage typically comes in towards the end, once the units, plumbing and electrics underneath are ready for it.

Can you fit a new island worktop into my existing kitchen without replacing the whole thing?

Sometimes, if the existing cabinetry is sound and can take the weight and shape of the new worktop. It still needs a site visit to check the floor, the units, and whether plumbing or electrics need extending to the island - a straightforward like-for-like swap is priced differently to fitting a brand new island.

Do I need planning permission for a kitchen island?

Generally no, since adding an island is an internal change rather than an extension. The exception is if achieving the space means removing a load-bearing wall, in which case building regulations sign-off is needed - something we'd flag at the home visit if it applies to your kitchen.

What guarantee do you offer on the worktop and its installation?

Every completed kitchen carries a 5-year guarantee on labour and installation and a 2-year guarantee on products, along with a written installation warranty once the job is signed off. You get the written agreement before work starts too, so pricing and scope are agreed upfront.
