If your worktop edges are chipped, the laminate strip is lifting at a seam, or you're specifying a new stone edge profile for a kitchen refit, getting worktop edging right in Nottingham comes down to matching the right process to the material -- get that wrong and the joint is the first thing that fails. Nottingham Kitchen Fitter has fitted and re-edged worktops across the city and wider East Midlands for over 20 years, working on everything from tight period kitchens in the Lace Market to modern city-centre apartments, and edging work is handled as part of the same design, supply and installation service used on full kitchen projects, so the profile, material and finish are agreed and templated properly rather than treated as an afterthought.
Edge profile and material choice affect day-to-day durability as much as looks -- a bullnose profile on a laminate worktop behaves very differently to an ogee edge cut into granite -- so a straight answer on what's realistic for your worktop, and what it costs to do properly, matters more than the marketing photos suggest.
What's Included in a Worktop Edging Job
- Measuring and templating the worktop, including laser templating for stone surfaces
- Supply and machining of the edge profile in your chosen material -- bullnose, bevel, ogee, square or waterfall
- Cutting, bonding and finishing on granite, quartz, marble, solid surface (Corian-type), laminate or porcelain worktops
- Colour and pattern matching where new edging is being blended with an existing worktop
- Sanding, polishing or sealing the finished edge as appropriate to the material
- A written agreement setting out material, profile and price before work starts, and a written installation warranty on completion

Not Included / Costed Separately
- Removing and disposing of an old worktop -- priced separately and carried out under our registered waste carrier licence
- Sink, hob or appliance cut-outs, which are usually only practical when the whole worktop is replaced rather than just re-edged
- Re-profiling a laminate worktop that's already fitted -- once bonded, laminate edging generally has to be replaced rather than re-cut
- Plumbing or electrical work disturbed during the job -- carried out by our own certified plumbers and Part P approved electricians, priced separately from the edging itself
How We Handle a Worktop Edging Job
- Enquiry -- Call or message with the worktop material, rough size and the edge profile you're after, or send a photo if you're not sure what you've currently got.
- Free home visit -- We measure the worktop on site, check the substrate and existing joints, and confirm which profiles and materials are actually viable before quoting.
- Templating and written quote -- Stone worktops are laser-templated; laminate and solid surface are measured manually. You get a written quotation covering material, profile and price before anything is booked.
- Cutting and fitting -- Stone edges are cut and jointed in-house by our stonemasons; laminate and solid surface edging is bonded and trimmed on site by our joiners, using epoxy resin or edge-banding as suits the material.
- Finishing and sign-off -- The new edge is sanded, polished or sealed as needed, the site is cleared, and the job is signed off with a written installation warranty.
What Worktop Edging Costs
Price depends mostly on material and profile. Laminate edging is the cheapest option and can often be done in a single visit; natural stone profiles such as a full ogee edge in granite or marble take longer to cut and cost more, both for the material and the stonemason's time. A straight or simple bullnose edge is usually the cheapest profile on any material -- more elaborate cuts add cost because of the extra machining involved. We don't publish a fixed price list for edging on its own because it varies too much by material, worktop length and the condition of what's already there -- a proper quote needs a site visit, which is free and comes with no obligation. As a broader reference point, complete kitchen projects through us start from around £5,000, with finance available through an FCA-regulated partner subject to status, for anyone where edging work forms part of a wider refit.
Comparing Worktop Edging Materials
| Material | Heat & scratch resistance | Maintenance | Typical cost position | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Laminate | Moderate -- use heat pads | Wipe clean, no sealing | Lowest cost | Budget refits, quick turnaround |
| Solid surface (Corian-type) | Good, can scorch or warp in extreme heat | Non-porous, minor scratches can be buffed out | Mid-range | Seamless, joint-free looks |
| Quartz | High | Wipe clean, no sealing needed | Mid to high | Busy kitchens wanting low upkeep |
| Granite | Very high | Occasional sealing | High | Durability and a natural stone look |
| Marble | Good heat resistance, prone to staining | Regular sealing required | High | Character and a luxury finish in lower-traffic kitchens |
| Porcelain | Very high | Wipe clean, minimal sealing | High, specialist cutting required | Modern kitchens with heavy daily use |
Stonework and Joinery Under One Roof
Edging a stone worktop is stonemason's work, not something to leave to a general fitter -- our granite, marble, quartz and sintered surface edging, including Corian and Dekton, is laser-templated and cut in-house, then jointed by our own stonemasons, while laminate and solid surface edging is handled by our City & Guilds trained joiners. That sits within a wider team that's completed 800+ kitchens for Nottingham and East Midlands homeowners over more than 20 years, still run as a family business rather than a national chain, so the person who measures your worktop is the person accountable for how the finished edge looks. Every job gets a written agreement before work starts and a written installation warranty on completion, backed by a 5-year guarantee on labour and installation and a 2-year guarantee on products.
Where We Fit Worktop Edging
We cover Nottingham and the wider East Midlands from our regional workshop, taking in Greater Nottingham -- West Bridgford, Wollaton, Beeston, Arnold and Sneinton -- plus Nottinghamshire towns including Mansfield, Kirkby-in-Ashfield and Stapleford, and into Derbyshire as far as Derby, Long Eaton, Alfreton and Heanor, roughly a 15-20 mile radius that stretches towards Chesterfield and the Derbyshire border. Older kitchens in the Lace Market and other city conservation areas often bring their own edging quirks -- worktops scribed around uneven walls or period cabinetry -- which is where laser templating earns its keep, since it captures the actual shape of the worktop rather than assuming it's square.
Worktop Edging Questions We Get Asked
Can you re-edge a worktop I already have, or does it need replacing?
It depends on the material and thickness. Solid stone worktops (granite, quartz, marble) can often be re-profiled if there's enough material to cut back into, but a laminate worktop that's already bonded and trimmed usually can't be re-edged once fitted -- the edging strip is designed to be applied once, so a damaged laminate edge normally means a new strip or a new worktop. We'll tell you which applies to yours on the site visit.
How long does a worktop edging job take?
A straightforward laminate edge on a single run of worktop can often be done in a day. Stone edging takes longer because the material has to be cut and finished properly -- expect it to be templated on one visit and fitted on a second, especially for anything beyond a simple bullnose or bevel profile.
Which edge profile is safest for a kitchen with young children?
A bullnose edge, with its fully rounded profile and no sharp corners, is the safest option and the easiest to keep clean. A square or waterfall edge looks striking but has a harder corner that's more likely to cause an injury or chip if knocked.
Do I need to replace the whole worktop to change the edge profile?
Not always. If there's enough depth in the material -- more likely with granite, quartz or marble than laminate -- we can often re-cut the existing edge to a new profile. We'll confirm this is genuinely possible for your worktop before quoting, rather than assuming it is.
Can you match new edging to an existing worktop that's a few years old?
We'll do our best to match colour and pattern, particularly with natural stone where every slab varies slightly, but an exact match to a worn or discoloured section of an older worktop isn't always achievable. We'll be upfront on the site visit about how close a match is realistic before you commit to anything.
What happens to my old worktop or offcuts?
Any worktop we remove and any offcuts from the edging work are cleared from site and disposed of under our registered waste carrier licence, so you don't need to arrange separate disposal.
Is stone worktop edging something I should attempt myself?
We wouldn't recommend it. Cutting and jointing granite, quartz or marble needs proper tooling and stonemasonry experience to avoid cracking the slab or leaving a visible joint line -- it's specialist work even for an experienced tradesperson outside that trade. Laminate edging is more DIY-friendly, but a poor bond will lift within months, which is usually what brings people to us in the first place.
Do you handle sink or hob cut-outs as part of an edging job?
Not usually as a standalone edging job. Cut-outs are precision work best done when the whole worktop is templated and fitted together, so if you need a new cut-out we'd normally look at that as part of a full worktop replacement rather than an edging-only visit.
